"I am inspired by the colors, shapes, atmosphere, and seasonal changes that I see in the Indiana landscape. I strive to remain truthful to my subject while looking to emphasize that which makes it unique, interesting, and worthy of being documented in a painting. Throughout the painting process, I also appreciate the feeling of the paint coming off the brush and the rhythms and motion of working across the canvas. Through this, I strive to capture the mood of the scene and relay a sense of place."

"As a landscape painter, being a Hoosier is paramount in my work. The Indiana landscape offers not only a variety and complexity of environments, but also opportunities to experience the simple and often understated beauty of our surroundings. This provides for limitless sources of inspiration. While finding daily prompts to create around my home of over a decade in Central Indiana, I continue to be called to the scenes of my childhood, the shores of Lake Michigan."

Over the years, I’ve made several attempts to push beyond my comfort level and paint in a different style. Until recently, I was left disappointed in my efforts. I felt the work was solid, but it felt forced and unnatural to me. In 2025, without expectations, I played with color from a left over palette and became engaged in a process that felt natural and intuitive. I consider these works to be Non-Representational - they are not about a subject, but about color, value, and composition. I hope you enjoy these!

Residency Statement:

The 2018 Indiana Dunes National Park Artist-in-Residence program provided a homecoming of sorts for Noblesville, IN oil painter Michael Janosky. Born and raised in Michigan City, IN, the influence of the dunes and beaches of the Lake Michigan shoreline is evident in his work. Michael began painting in Michigan City as a youth and has returned for several short visits since leaving the area. For the past twenty years, Michael’s work has been dominated by the landscape of central Indiana. His residency provided the opportunity to immerse himself in the dunes environment and reconnect with the landscape of his youth.

To truly capture the essence of a subject, Michael believes you must paint what you know and understand. The time to explore, observe, and contemplate was the foremost purpose of his residency. Michael had the opportunity to gather reference material which will provide a limitless source of inspiration and has begun working on a series of paintings from his experience. He is looking forward to seeing its influence in his work and to share, from an artist’s perspective, the unique and distinctive characteristics of the dunes environment.

In the Spring and Fall of 2025, I had the privilege of staying at The Lakeside Inn as an Artist-in-Residence. The immediate proximity to Lake Michigan and the creative, historic atmosphere has led to a considerable body of work. Presented here is a selection of available paintings.

Lakeside Inn is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Inn was also designated a State of Michigan Historic Landmark in May of 2004. The Lakeside Inn’s state historical marker, located next to Lakeshore Road, reads:

“Known as Ames Grove, this property served as a picnic ground and recreation area beginning in the 1880s. John Aylesworth purchased the property in 1901 and opened the Lakeside Inn in this building as early as 1915. The hotel once had its own zoo and extensive gardens. During the 1930s and 1940s Chicago orchestras played at the Inn. The Lakeside Center for the Arts occupied the premises from 1968 to 1994 and hosted artists from around the world. In 1995 the inn was restored to its 1920s appearance.”

Over the years, I have enjoyed many summer days in Saugatuck, Michigan along the Kalamazoo River and the Shore of Lake Michigan. Saugatuck is a wonderful arts community, has great dining and retail establishments, and features a picturesque beach - Oval Beach. Oval Beach is the setting of most of the paintings in this gallery.

I started painting smaller scale pieces a few years ago. These are popular as gifts, especially during the holidays when many galleries have miniature exhibitions. They are also well-suited for beginning collectors and those with limited space. I especially like the square format and settled on 6" x 6" as my go-to miniature size. These are oil on canvas panels in 2-1/2" wide plein air style frames in an espresso or gold finish.

At times, other subjects demand my attention. On occasion, I will produce work themed specifically for an exhibition, a special event, or a commission. Sometimes, I just feel like doing something a little different.
